Kapooka reflections

What does it take to train like an Army reservist? Recently, our General Manager, Ben Witteveen, found out first-hand through the Kapooka VIP Challenge. A unique program designed to immerse participants in the life of a reservist.

For Ben, this experience offered a deeper understanding of what reservists do, the rigor of their training, and the immense value they bring to workplaces. As an organisation that champions veteran and reservist employment, this insight was invaluable for Ben’s leadership.

At Crown Management Consultants, we know veterans and reservists make exceptional employees. We’re veteran-owned, it’s in our DNA. The qualities they bring to the workplace are embedded in our culture. Our commitment to supporting veteran employment is ongoing and recognised through our status as a Veteran Friendly Employer.

Read on for Ben’s reflections after two action-packed days at Kapooka.

Day One: Immersion Begins

The day started at 5:45am, a typical start for recruits. We left Brindabella Park on a packed bus bound for Kapooka, arriving around 11am. Once there, we were greeted by a Major responsible for new recruit training, who walked us through a typical three-month program and structure.

We then toured the base, where we experienced:

  • Live-fire training

  • Close-quarters combat drills (including breaching doors into confined spaces)

  • Battlefield medical treatment, one of the most challenging core units due to its complexity and rigorous testing.

Next came the obstacle course, which recruits must complete as a team within a strict time limit. We had the chance to tackle most of the obstacles ourselves, an eye-opening experience! The Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) were very supportive, unlike their "tough" reputation!

The day ended on a high at the Officers’ Mess for Oktoberfest, where we enjoyed German food and beer with the trainers. This was a group of impressive and approachable professionals who made the experience even more memorable.

Day Two: A Broader Perspective

Friday started with a visit to the recruit dorms, five to a room, where went through a typical daily routine. From there, we headed to RAAF Base Wagga, toured the facilities, and spent time with one of the RAAF trainers. The insight into both the Army and Air Force training was fascinating and offered a broader perspective on Defence Force roles.

We wrapped up with a visit to the RAAF Museum before heading home, reflecting on two action-packed days.

Final Thoughts

This experience reinforced why veterans and reservists make outstanding employees: resilience, teamwork, adaptability, and leadership under pressure. At Crown Management Consultants, we’re proud to support veteran employment, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes our organisation stronger.
